The Govardhan Parikrama can be done by e-rickshaw in about 2–3 hours, with stops for darshan at Daan Ghati, Jatipura's Mukharvind, Punchhari ka Lautha and Radha Kund. It is the usual choice for elderly parents, families with small children and anyone who cannot walk the full 21 km. The same rule applies as on foot: go clockwise, with Giriraj ji on your right, and finish where you began.
| Way | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| On foot, full circle | 5–8 hr | Fit walkers starting before dawn |
| On foot, one loop | 2.5–4 hr | Families splitting it over two days |
| E-rickshaw, full circle | 2–3 hr | Elderly parents, small children |
| Walk and ride | 3–5 hr | Mixed groups: the young walk, the elders ride and meet them |
| Car, main points | 2–3 hr | Very limited mobility; not on festival days |
How an e-rickshaw parikrama works
- Find a rickshaw at Daan Ghati, in Govardhan town or anywhere along the route. If you are staying at Vrajraj, we can help you find one.
- Agree everything first: the total fare, the full circle or one loop, which stops you want, and how long the driver will wait at each.
- Start where you are and go clockwise. Many families begin at Daan Ghati with milk abhishek.
- Stop for darshan at the main shrines. Elders can stay seated while one family member offers flowers or milk on everyone's behalf.
- Finish where you began, completing the circle.
Stops worth making
- Daan Ghati: milk abhishek to Giriraj ji, and the traditional start.
- Jatipura, Mukharvind: worshipped as the mouth of Giriraj ji, and Shrinathji's first seat.
- Punchhari ka Lautha: "register your attendance" with Lautha Baba at the southern tip. The story.
- Manasi Ganga: the great tank at the heart of Govardhan.
- Radha Kund and Shyam Kund: the most sacred kunds of Braj. Radha Kund guide.
- Kusum Sarovar: sandstone ghats and cenotaphs, lovely at sunset.
Walk and ride: the family plan
For a three-generation family, this plan works well. The younger members walk one loop on foot, say the 12 km loop through Punchhari and Jatipura, while the elders ride the same loop by e-rickshaw, stopping for darshan and waiting at the next shrine. Everyone meets at Daan Ghati to finish together. The next day, do the shorter Radha Kund loop the same way, or rest. Our parikrama guide describes both loops.
By car
Roads link the main points around the hill, so a car can take a family from Daan Ghati to Jatipura, Punchhari, Radha Kund and Kusum Sarovar. But a car cannot follow every stretch of the walking path, and parking near the shrines is limited. On Purnima, Ekadashi and festival days vehicles are often stopped outside the town. Use a car if mobility is very limited, and switch to an e-rickshaw for the stretches a car cannot reach.
Tips for elderly pilgrims
- Choose a quiet day. Avoid Purnima, the Ekadashi before it, weekends in Kartik and the big festivals.
- Go early or late. In summer, start before 7 am or after 5 pm.
- Carry water, medicines, a cushion and a shawl, as rickshaw seats are hard and mornings can be cold in winter.
- Keep it short if needed. One loop with heartfelt darshan is better than an exhausting full circle.
- Stay close to the route so that nobody is tired before you begin. Staying on the parikrama marg.
