Govardhan has four main places to stay: the town around Daan Ghati and Manasi Ganga, Radha Kund to the north, Jatipura on the western side of the hill, and the quieter southern tip at Punchhari. All of them sit on or near the 21 km Govardhan Parikrama, so the real choice is between walking distance to the busiest temples and calm and space. This guide is written by people who live here, at Punchhari.
The areas, compared
| Area | Best for | Watch out for | From Daan Ghati |
|---|---|---|---|
| Govardhan town: Daan Ghati & Manasi Ganga | Pilgrims without a car; starting the parikrama at Daan Ghati | Noise and crowds, especially on Purnima and festival nights | Daan Ghati: 0 km |
| Radha Kund | Gaudiya Vaishnava and ISKCON devotees; early-morning kund darshan | Huge crowds on Ahoi Ashtami; many stays are ashram guesthouses with house rules | ~5 km |
| Jatipura | Pushtimarg Vaishnavs visiting Mukharvind and Shrinathji's first seat | Mostly samaj bhavans and dharamshalas, often booked through community trusts | ~3 km |
| Punchhari (Vrajraj) | Families, slower trips, celebrations, a quiet base for all of Braj | Not walkable to Daan Ghati; you drive 15–25 minutes to the town | ~7 km |
Govardhan town
Most pilgrims stay here. You can walk to Daan Ghati for milk abhishek before dawn and begin the parikrama from the door. The town has the widest choice of dharamshalas, ashrams and simple hotels, many along the Mathura road and around the bus stand. The trade-off is noise: the parikrama runs through the town, and on Purnima and festival nights it is busy around the clock.
Radha Kund
Radha Kund is the heart of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, and many devotees, including ISKCON pilgrims, stay in its ashrams and guesthouses to bathe at the kunds and attend kirtan. Early mornings are beautiful. On Ahoi Ashtami, the midnight snan draws enormous crowds. Our Radha Kund guide.
Jatipura
Jatipura is home to the Mukharvind of Giriraj ji and the hill where Shrinathji was first worshipped, making it the centre of Govardhan for Pushtimarg Vaishnavs. Many of its stays are bhavans and dharamshalas run by Gujarati, Rajasthani and other communities, usually booked through the trust. Places to visit in Govardhan.
Punchhari
The southern tip of the hill, the poonchh of Giriraj ji, is open farmland on the UP–Rajasthan border. Every parikrama passes Punchhari ka Lautha, but there is no town here, so nights are quiet and the skies are open. Vrajraj Farms & Retreat is about 2 km from the Lautha, 4 km from Jatipura and 7 km from Daan Ghati, with Barsana, Mathura and Vrindavan within an hour or so.
Types of stay in Govardhan
- Dharamshalas and samaj bhavans: run by temples, trusts and communities. They are simple and inexpensive, and often have gate timings and house rules. Many are booked by phone or in person rather than online.
- Ashram guesthouses: especially at Radha Kund, built around a daily programme of kirtan and darshan. Ideal if that programme is what you came for.
- Budget and mid-range hotels: mostly in the town and along the Mathura road. Convenient for a night or two.
- Retreats: few so far. Vrajraj is a farm retreat with rooms, lawns, a gaushala, a garden Krishna temple and its own kitchen, for guests who want Braj at a slower pace.
What to check before you book
- Where you will start the parikrama, and how you will get there before dawn.
- Parking, and whether vehicles can reach the property on festival days. During big melas, traffic is often stopped outside the town.
- Rest after the walk: a quiet room matters if you walk at night or before dawn and need to sleep during the day.
- For elderly parents: ground-floor rooms or a lift, western toilets and hot water in winter.
- Food: whether meals are served on site, and at what hours. Early breakfasts and late dinners help on parikrama days.
- Festival dates: check the festival calendar and book early for Kartik, Govardhan Puja and Mudiya Purnima.
Staying in Mathura or Vrindavan instead
Many visitors stay in Mathura or Vrindavan and come to Govardhan for a day. It works, but you lose the pre-dawn start that makes the parikrama comfortable, and you add 1–2 hours of driving. If Govardhan is the main reason for your trip, stay at Govardhan and visit Vrindavan and Mathura from here instead.
