Braj is best seen slowly. Temples close for several hours around midday, old-town lanes are crowded, and the drive between towns takes longer than the map suggests. These itineraries assume you start from Delhi NCR and use Vrajraj at Punchhari, Govardhan as your base. Drive times are realistic estimates, not map best-cases.
| From Vrajraj to | Road | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Jatipura / Daan Ghati (Govardhan) | 4–7 km | 10–25 min |
| Radha Kund | 12 km | 25–35 min |
| Barsana | 27 km | 45–60 min |
| Mathura (Krishna Janmasthan) | 27 km | 45–60 min |
| Nandgaon | 34 km | ~1 hr |
| Vrindavan | 37 km | 1–1.5 hr |
| Delhi | ~150 km | 3.5–4.5 hr |
2-day Braj itinerary
Day 1: Delhi → Govardhan
- Early morning: leave Delhi by 6 am. Take the Delhi–Agra highway (NH-44) via Faridabad, Palwal and Kosi Kalan, or the Yamuna Expressway from Noida. You should reach Govardhan by 10 am.
- Late morning: darshan and milk abhishek at Daan Ghati, then Manasi Ganga.
- Afternoon: check in, eat a simple lunch and rest. Afternoons are hot and many temples are closed.
- Evening: Kusum Sarovar at sunset, then Radha Kund for the evening aarti.
Day 2: Parikrama, Barsana and Vrindavan → Delhi
- Dawn: walk the longer loop of the Govardhan Parikrama (about 12 km, via Punchhari ka Lautha and Jatipura), or take an e-rickshaw.
- Late morning: drive to Barsana (45–60 min) for the Shriji temple on the hill.
- Afternoon: drive to Vrindavan and see Prem Mandir and ISKCON Krishna Balaram Mandir as their evening darshan opens.
- Evening: Banke Bihari darshan if crowds allow, then head back to Delhi (about 3–3.5 hours from Vrindavan).
3-day Braj itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Govardhan
Drive from Delhi, then visit Daan Ghati and Manasi Ganga. Rest through the afternoon at the retreat. In the evening, see Punchhari ka Lautha (5–10 minutes away) and the sunset over the fields.
Day 2: Govardhan Parikrama, Radha Kund, Barsana
Walk the parikrama at dawn, in full or as one loop. Spend late morning at Radha Kund and Kusum Sarovar. In the afternoon, drive to Barsana; climb to the Shriji temple and visit Nandgaon (Nand Bhawan) on the way back.
Day 3: Vrindavan and Mathura → Delhi
Leave early for Mathura and the Shri Krishna Janmasthan, then Vrindavan: Banke Bihari, ISKCON and Prem Mandir. Head back to Delhi in the evening; if you can stay, the Yamuna aarti at Vishram Ghat in Mathura is worth it.
Add a day
- Gokul and Dauji (Baldeo): across the Yamuna, linked to Krishna's childhood and to Balarama.
- Deeg Palace: 14 km from Vrajraj, with 18th-century water palaces and gardens.
- Keoladeo National Park, Bharatpur: about 40 km away, best from November to February for birds.
- Agra: the Taj Mahal is about 2–2.5 hours away, so you can combine Braj and Agra in one trip.
- Simply stay: a slow day on the farm with family. Sometimes the best holiday is not about doing more.
Tips for a smoother trip
- Avoid weekends and festival days in Vrindavan if you dislike crowds, or visit Vrindavan very early.
- Plan around midday closures. Most temples close for a few hours in the afternoon; check timings on the day.
- In winter (mid-December to mid-February), dense fog slows the roads, and expressway speed limits are reduced.
- Check the festival calendar. Festivals are magical but bring huge crowds.
