Vrajraj Farms & Retreat is a peaceful farm retreat near Vrindavan, at Punchhari on the Govardhan Parikrama, about 37 km by road from Banke Bihari and the old town. We are not in Vrindavan, and we won't pretend to be. We are for travellers who want to see Vrindavan's temples by day and return to open fields and quiet at night. From here Govardhan, Barsana and Mathura are all closer than they are from Vrindavan itself.

Stay in Vrindavan, or near it?

Both are good choices for different trips. Here is our honest view.

Stay inside Vrindavan if

  • you want to walk to Banke Bihari, Radha Raman and the ghats at dawn, every day;
  • your trip is about Vrindavan alone, and you are not driving;
  • you are attending a programme at an ashram or ISKCON and want to be on site.

Stay near Vrindavan, in Govardhan, if

  • you are travelling by car with children or elderly parents and want space, parking and quiet;
  • you want to walk the Govardhan Parikrama as well as see Vrindavan;
  • you also want Barsana and Nandgaon, which are much closer to Govardhan;
  • you are visiting on a weekend or festival, when Vrindavan's lanes and hotels are packed;
  • you are bringing the whole family together for a celebration and need lawns, halls and rooms in one place.

Where people stay around Vrindavan

If you are comparing hotels, it helps to know the areas first. Each suits a different kind of visitor:

  • The old town (Banke Bihari, Radha Raman, Nidhivan, the Parikrama Marg and the ghats): ashrams, guesthouses and small hotels within walking distance of the oldest temples. The lanes are narrow and very crowded, and vehicles are often restricted on busy days.
  • Raman Reti and Bhaktivedanta Swami Marg (around ISKCON and Prem Mandir): newer hotels and guesthouses that are easier to reach by car, about 2–3 km from Banke Bihari. Evenings around Prem Mandir are busy.
  • Chhatikara Road and the highway side: larger hotels with parking, convenient if you drive in from Delhi, and 15–30 minutes from the old town depending on traffic.
  • Mathura city: about 10 km from Vrindavan, with hotels near Krishna Janmasthan and the railway station. See staying near Mathura.
  • Govardhan: dharamshalas and guesthouses in town and at Radha Kund, and Vrajraj at Punchhari for a retreat setting. See where to stay in Govardhan.

A Vrindavan day from Vrajraj

Here is how a day in Vrindavan works from Punchhari. Temple timings change with the season and on festival days, so check on the day.

  • Early morning: tea, then leave by about 7. You reach the edge of Vrindavan in about an hour. Park outside the old town and take an e-rickshaw in.
  • Morning: Banke Bihari darshan (weekday mornings are calmest), then Radha Raman, Radha Vallabh and Nidhivan. Walk down to Keshi Ghat on the Yamuna.
  • Midday: lunch and a rest. Most temples close for a few hours in the afternoon.
  • Late afternoon: ISKCON Krishna Balaram Mandir, then Prem Mandir as dusk falls and the lights come on.
  • Evening: drive back and be home for dinner.

You can also do it the other way round: walk the Govardhan Parikrama at dawn, rest through the hot afternoon, and drive to Vrindavan for evening darshan. Our 2- and 3-day Braj itineraries combine Vrindavan with Govardhan, Barsana and Mathura.

Why Govardhan works as a base for Vrindavan

  • It is the middle of western Braj. Govardhan, Radha Kund, Barsana, Nandgaon and Mathura are all within about an hour, and Vrindavan only a little more.
  • The parikrama is at the door. Vrajraj is 2 km from Punchhari ka Lautha at the southern tip of Giriraj ji.
  • Nights are quiet. You wake to birdsong and open skies instead of traffic and loudspeakers.
  • There is room to breathe. Lawns, a working farm and a gaushala give children somewhere to explore while the elders rest.
  • Celebrations fit. Lawns, halls and rooms on one property make it easy to host a family function in Braj. See celebrations and weddings.

Tips for visiting Vrindavan

  • Avoid weekends, Ekadashi and festival days at Banke Bihari if you dislike crowds, or go early on a weekday.
  • Leave the car outside the old town and use e-rickshaws. The lanes near Banke Bihari are not built for cars.
  • Mind the monkeys. Vrindavan's monkeys are famous for snatching spectacles, phones and bags. Keep them out of sight.
  • Dress modestly, expect to leave shoes outside, and do not assume photography is allowed inside temples.
  • Check the Braj festival calendar before you fix dates. Janmashtami, Holi and Kartik transform the town.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best resort near Vrindavan?

It depends on what you want from the trip. If you want to walk to Banke Bihari and Radha Raman at dawn every day, stay inside Vrindavan. If you want space, quiet nights and a base that also puts Govardhan, Barsana and Mathura within an hour, a retreat outside the town suits you better. Vrajraj Farms & Retreat at Punchhari, Govardhan is built for the second kind of trip, and is opening soon.

How far is Vrajraj from Vrindavan?

About 37 km by road to Banke Bihari and the old town, usually 1 to 1.5 hours; the last stretch inside Vrindavan is the slow part. Prem Mandir and ISKCON, on the near side of town, are about 38 km and roughly an hour.

Is it better to stay in Vrindavan or Govardhan?

Stay in Vrindavan for a temple-focused trip on foot. Stay in Govardhan if you have a car, are travelling with children or elderly parents, want to walk the Govardhan Parikrama, or want to see Barsana and Nandgaon too. Barsana is about 27 km from Vrajraj but 47 km from Vrindavan.

Can I see Vrindavan and Govardhan in one day?

Yes. Govardhan town is about 28 km from Vrindavan. A common plan is the Govardhan Parikrama or Daan Ghati darshan in the early morning, rest through the hot middle of the day, and Vrindavan's temples in the evening. See our Braj itineraries.
