A hotel in Mathura, or a retreat near it?
A city hotel makes sense if you are catching a very early or late train, have one day for Krishna Janmasthan, or are in Mathura on work. Hotels near the station and Janmasthan keep everything within a short auto ride.
A retreat outside the city makes sense if you are travelling as a family, want a slower trip, or want to cover Govardhan, Barsana and Vrindavan as well. Mathura sits at the eastern edge of Braj, so from the city most of western Braj is a longer drive. From Govardhan, Barsana is 27 km; from Mathura it is about 42 km.
Arriving by train at Mathura Junction
Mathura Junction is on the main Delhi–Mumbai and Delhi–Chennai lines, with frequent trains from Delhi. Taxis are available outside the station and the drive to Punchhari takes 45–60 minutes on the Mathura–Govardhan road. Let us know your train in your enquiry and we will help arrange the pickup. A Mathura day from Vrajraj
- Morning: Shri Krishna Janmasthan. Go early. Security is strict: mobile phones, bags and electronics are generally not allowed inside, so leave them in the car or use the cloakroom.
- Late morning: Dwarkadhish temple and the old city. The temple closes for a few hours around midday, so go before noon.
- Midday: lunch, and the Government Museum for the sculpture of the Mathura school if you enjoy history.
- Afternoon: cross the Yamuna to Gokul, or carry on to Vrindavan, only about 10 km away.
- Evening: the Yamuna aarti at Vishram Ghat, then about an hour's drive home to Govardhan.
Timings change with the season and on festival days. Our Mathura, Vrindavan & Govardhan itinerary fits Mathura into a 2- or 3-day trip.
Celebrations near Mathura
Many Mathura families look for a venue outside the city for a birthday, mundan, anniversary, satsang or wedding, where guests can stay overnight. Vrajraj's lawns, multipurpose halls and rooms are designed for exactly that, with food from our own kitchen. See celebrations and events, weddings in Braj or corporate offsites.
